Burton Kvernevig
Burton Kvernevig was born July 31, 1927. He was the 4th child of Bernard and Ida Kvernevig. They lived on a farm in Day County, SD Between the small towns of Crandal, Crocker, and Lily.
When Burt was 5 his mother contracted tuberculosis and went to a sanitarium in Fort Meade, SD. She never came home again. He was able to see her once a year when the whole family went to visit. She passed away from the flu when he was 9. During the depression of the 30'S, his father moved to Webster, SD to work for the Works Project Administration. By doing this and leasing the farm to others he was able to preserve the farm. The family lost any money they had when the Bank of Lily closed during the Great Depression.
Burt had three older siblings; Palmer, Clara, and Rodney. Palmer died on board a ship in the Pacific. Clara spent most of her life in Day County close to the farm. Rodney farmed for a number of years. He left the farm to work at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD. He later went to work for the Milwaukee Road to be closer to the farm. However, the farm was eventually sold.
Burt served in the Coast Guard during WWII. After the war, he attended Augustana College and later went to Luther Seminary for 3 years. He never became a minister but has remained a faithful Christian.
Burt married his wife Helen Evenson while in the seminary. They had two children, Mark and Kathy. Helen passed away a number of years ago. Mark resides in Crookston and Kathy lives in Thief River Falls. Burt has one granddaughter in Thief River Falls.
Burt was employed by the Minnesota Department of Social Services located in Thief River Falls. He was there for many years before moving to Aberdeen, SD, and working for the South Dakota Department of Social Services. After retirement, he moved to Stillwater, MN. After a period of time there, he moved to Crookston to be close to his children. He lived there until October of 2021 when he became a resident of Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
Burt is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston. He has been a faithful servant, studying the bible and attending church. He misses attending his church. He also misses his friends at the Golden Link Senior Center in Crookston, where he shared so many meals with them.
